Apple and Cider
2010’s pardoned turkeys
President Obama, accompanied by his two daughters Sasha and Malia, pardoned Apple, and his alternate,Cider, on Wednesday, November 24, 2010. The day before Thanksgiving they pardoned these two fine birds behind the White House in Rose Garden. The turkeys were raised at Foster Farms Wellsford Ranch outside Modesto, California. Pardoning Thanksgiving turkeys is a White House tradition. President Kennedy was the first president to officially pardon a turkey, but many other presidents claim to have done it before him. Some legends date back as far as Abraham Lincoln, who supposedly pardoned his son Tad's pet turkey. There is no evidence supporting this legend or any others.
